Puerto Rican Coffee: Where To Find It? Besides in Puerto Rico!

Does anyone know where to find coffee from Puerto Rico? Besides in Puerto Rico!

This is a great question, and I understand the frustration of those who ask that question.

Puerto Rican coffee has recieved the same label as other "tropical" coffees such as Kona from Hawaii & Blue mountain from Jamaica. Herein lies your problem: All of these coffees are outrageously expensive. And folks, just because your coffee costs you $25 a pound does not mean it will be better than any other coffee out there. In fact, people I know who "cup" coffees for a living are as confused as I am about the price of these coffees based on taste.

They are good, possibly even great coffees, but so is Colombian Bucaramanga.

The difference is they are three times as expensive.

I have tried coffee from all three of these locations, and to be honest, I personally felt Puerto Rican coffee was the best of all three. I recieved some samples of "Yauco Selecto", which I found to be very pleasant and buttery. You won't pay $25-$30 a pound for coffee from Puerto Rico, but you will pay $15-$20 for a pound of it. It also seems that they don't ship a lot of it to the United States which also makes a good crop hard to find.

Make sure you are getting 100% Puerto Rican coffee in there too. A lot of people get fooled, especially with Kona and Jamaican Blue, because of the blend factor. If you buy a "Kona Blend", or "Jamaican Blue Blend", it technically only has to contain 10%-15% Kona for them to call it a Kona Blend. My two cents about Kona is ... Kona is good coffee, but get yourself a good Costa Rican like "Tarrazu", and say good bye to Kona and getting "ripped-off".

Bottom line is you can get Puerto Rican in the United States and it's awesome, but it won't be cheap. It might be hard to find locally depending where you live. Online is your best bet, but be sure to find a roaster that is concerned with freshness.
